The Rolls-Royce Vision 100 concept is completely, irredeemably ridiculous

Rolls-Royce, a brand synonymous with exceptional luxury, has unveiled a new concept car as part of BMW’s centenary celebrations, offering a glimpse into the future of mobility in the next few decades. The Rolls-Royce Vision 100 concept is nothing short of extravagant and audacious, taking opulence to new extremes. As it rolled onto the stage in London, it left spectators in awe, much like the christening of a colossal cruise ship.

Measuring an imposing 20 feet in length (5.9 meters) and towering at five feet tall, the Vision 100 dwarfs both its occupants and onlookers, surpassing the grandeur of even the most luxurious Rolls-Royce models of today.

Rolls-Royce introduced this car as “her,” and it’s more than fitting. The iconic Spirit of Ecstasy figurine that graces the car’s front has been personified as an AI named Eleanor, residing within the vehicle. Described as your “ethereal concierge,” Eleanor responds to your voice commands, managing various functions within the car. Like a diligent AI, she learns your preferences over time, from preferred routes to restaurants, and even your taste in art. The Vision 100 represents a fully autonomous, zero-emissions vehicle, emphasizing BMW’s belief in the future of electric mobility.

Remarkably, this grandiose car showcased today was a two-seater, with interiors rivaling the size of apartments in London and San Francisco. Inside, you’ll find a sofa (or couch for our American readers) with no traditional steering wheel or instrument panel, which Rolls-Royce deems “superfluous” in this model. Instead, passengers in this luxurious cocoon are greeted by a full cabin-width transparent OLED display. The interior is adorned with Macassar wood, featuring a carpet of “hand-twisted silk” and “exceptionally soft silk” upholstery.

While the exterior of the car speaks for itself in its dramatic and spectacular design, there is a tinge of disappointment in the way Rolls-Royce portrays it. The luggage compartment, for example, is presented as being conveniently positioned for servants and aides to access, reinforcing the notion that a Rolls-Royce owner would never handle their own bags. Furthermore, the concept of a “grand arrival” with the Vision 100, although consistent with Rolls-Royce’s theme, essentially underscores this vehicle as a symbol of conspicuous wealth.

In its audacious extravagance, the Rolls-Royce Vision 100 concept pushes the boundaries of automotive luxury, making a statement that is both breathtaking and thought-provoking.
